The Best Running Shoes For Flat Feet

The arch of the foot is formed by the tarsal and metatarsal bones and strengthened by ligaments and tendons. It allows the foot to support the weight of the body in the erect posture with the least weight.

The height of the arch determines pronation and foot type. The arch height of the foot can easily be checked using the wet feet test.

People with a Low arch do not have a distinct curve along the inside of the foot. The imprint taken in a wet test may show nearly the entire foot. People with low arches are more likely to overpronate which can result in injuries. Insufficiently expressed arches are called low or fallen arches. The term flat feet applies to the arch which is sitting on the ground completely.

* Runners with flat feet need to put extra care in choosing the best running shoe

Your foot arch is your natural shock absorption system. Nature designed it so that when you put your body weight over your feet the shock is absorbed by this mechanism in order to alleviate the impact (and subsequent injuries) that would otherwise hit your feet, ankles, knees and hips. A flat foot is the most visible sign of overpronation, meaning that your arch collapses during the impact on the ground. As a consequence, your ankle twists inward and your knees overcompensates.

Flat feet are a particular concern for runners, as during the running gait the arch is supposed to support on average 3 times their body weight.

* Shoes Technologies Aimed at Runners with Flat Feet

Over the last 20 years or so, all the major running footwear producers developed specific technologies aimed at helping runners with flat feet run in comfort and safety.
The key words you have to remember are: stability, support and motion control.
- Support is what a flat foot runner needs. When looking at shoes reviews or technical specifications, any indication of "added support" means you are headed in the right direction.
- Stability is an industry standard term that categorizes running shoes aimed at helping overpronation: every brand has their own collection of Stability Running Shoes.
- Motion Control are Stability Shoes for the most severe overpronators: they include the solutions of stability shoes and focus in enhancing them.

The main technology found in Stability shoes is a medial post of dual density foam. Footwear producers inject a harder compound of foam right below the medial side of the arch and sometimes extended all the way to the heel. It is easily recognizable as a darker (almost always gray) piece of foam on the inside of the midsole.

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

We have always heard the phrase that 'high heels are dangerous.' High heels causes several health issues related to the knees, back and spine. And, when it becomes too difficult to manage people just switch on to flat shoes. But, did you know that flats are dangerous too?

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

There have been a rise in the number of foot injuries in the past few years caused by flat shoes like flip flops and ballerinas. Though convenient, these shoes can cause severe pain in the back and shins. People scuff their feet instead of walking which wrecks the posture of the body and results in severe pain which in turn causes bunions. [ A bunion is a painful condition caused by the deformity of the bones at the first joint of the big toe]. It's not it, the knee caps can also get swollen resulting in severe pain. And, if the shoes have hard insoles the effect is even worse. Whether they are flat or high heeled, it's best to stay away from footwear that has hard insoles.

In fact walking with heels has its own benefits. It modifies the center of gravity preparing your legs to generate muscle and toning them particularly in the calf and thighs. And, for those who suffer from bad blood circulation wearing one inch heels can actually improve the amount of blood flowing from the legs to the upper body. Apart from it, it also aids in proper alignment of the lower back muscles giving the illusion of a hale and hearty curve at the back. This does not mean you can walk in a six inch heel and still remain healthy. While a six inch heel can instantly jazz up an outfit, the hazardous effects are no less when worn constantly. The ideal height is one to one and a half inch heel as it improves your calf muscles. Another aspect is to wear different kinds of heel lengths at different times. Do not stick on to one particular length for a long period.

Most of the severe foot conditions are cause by improper footwear and women are prone to these conditions five times more than the men. Experts say that our feet carries us between 55,000 and 120,000 miles in our lifetime. Hence it is only fair that you take proper care, after all our feet carries our entire body.

The Things That Matter Overview

Does your home tell the story of who you are?

In The Things That Matter, Nate Berkus shares intimate stories from his life, introduces us to people who influenced him and helped him forge his sense of style, and opens up about the remarkable experiences that have left him forever changed, all of which find expression in how he lives today. From his most cherished flea market finds, to his beloved books and photos, to the many extraordinary mementos he’s collected in his travels, every piece defines who he’s become and what endures in his world.

Berkus invites readers into his own home as well as into twelve others, including a sleek steel-and-glass high-rise that soars above Chicago, a rustic cottage in the Hudson Valley, an ultra-chic atelier that maximizes every inch of space, a Greenwich Village townhouse that holds multiple art collections, and a study in meaningful minimalism in Marfa, Texas. The distinctive interiors beautifully displayed in this book offer revealing portraits of their owners’ lives and the inspiring choices that have made them who they are today.

The Things That Matter convincingly lays out Nate Berkus’s philosophy that things do matter. Our homes tell our stories, they reflect the places we’ve been and the people we’ve loved along the way—and there can be no more beautiful design for living than that.

Persuader (Jack Reacher, No. 7) Overview

Jack Reacher.

The ultimate loner.

An elite ex-military cop who left the service years ago, he’s moved from place to place…without family…without possessions…without commitments.

And without fear. Which is good, because trouble—big, violent, complicated trouble—finds Reacher wherever he goes. And when trouble finds him, Reacher does not quit, not once…not ever.

But some unfinished business has now found Reacher. And Reacher is a man who hates unfinished business.

Ten years ago, a key investigation went sour and someone got away with murder. Now a chance encounter brings it all back. Now Reacher sees his one last shot. Some would call it vengeance. Some would call it redemption. Reacher would call it…justice.

Persuader (Jack Reacher, No. 7) Specifications

Jack Reacher, the taciturn ex-MP whose adventures in Lee Child's six previous solidly plotted, expertly paced thrillers have won a devoted fan base, returns in this explosive tale of an undercover operation set up by the FBI to rescue an agent investigating Zachary Beck, a reclusive tycoon believed to be a kingpin in the drug trade. The novel begins with a bang as Reacher rescues Beck's son from a staged kidnapping in order to get close to his father--and trace the connection between Beck and Quinn, a former army intelligence officer who tried to sell blueprints of a secret weapon to Iraq but was murdered before he could pull it off. Or so Reacher thinks, until he spots Quinn in the crowd at a concert in Boston. As usual, Child ratchets up the tension and keeps the reader in suspense until the last page, although his enigmatic hero hardly ever seems to break a sweat. In the tough guy tradition, Reacher and his creator are overdue for a breakout, and this muscular, well-written mystery might be the one. --Jane Adams

Joe is an adventurer. Joe was supposed to be with him that day but had backed out at the last second.

Could this be why Joe suddenly told Elaine, "I want to walk the Camino de Santiago and I want you to walk with me?"

After deliberating the wisdom of walking 500 miles with no planning or physical conditioning, the two set off to walk the "Way of Saint James." Their "no-plan" plan sets off a series of extraordinary events that can only be explained as divine intervention. It starts with an enigmatic suggestion from a former pilgrim who sends them off with a caution: "There are no coincidences on the Camino."

The tale itself is a funny, fascinating pilgrim's progress seeded by unique characters and full of amazing surprises. Follow along the pilgrim's path as it shares its secrets on how to:
  • Create a life that's unafraid of death
  • Experience emotional lightness by carrying a smaller physical load
  • Journey without plans, and have more fun doing it

The Namesake: A Novel

The Namesake: A Novel Feature

The Namesake: A Novel Overview

Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies established this young writer as one the most brilliant of her generation. Her stories are one of the very few debut works -- and only a handful of collections -- to have won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Among the many other awards and honors it received were the New Yorker Debut of the Year award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, and the highest critical praise for its grace, acuity, and compassion in detailing lives transported from India to America. In The Namesake, Lahiri enriches the themes that made her collection an international bestseller: the immigrant experience, the clash of cultures, the conflicts of assimilation, and, most poignantly, the tangled ties between generations. Here again Lahiri displays her deft touch for the perfect detail -- the fleeting moment, the turn of phrase -- that opens whole worlds of emotion.
The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their fraught transformation into Americans. On the heels of their arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle together in Cambridge, Massachusetts. An engineer by training, Ashoke adapts far less warily than his wife, who resists all things American and pines for her family. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name. Lahiri brings great empathy to Gogol as he stumbles along the first-generation path, strewn with conflicting loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. With penetrating insight, she reveals not only the defining power of the names and expectations bestowed upon us by our parents, but also the means by which we slowly, sometimes painfully, come to define ourselves. The New York Times has praised Lahiri as "a writer of uncommon elegance and poise." The Namesake is a fine-tuned, intimate, and deeply felt novel of identity.

The Namesake: A Novel Specifications

Any talk of The Namesake--Jhumpa Lahiri's follow-up to her Pulitzer Prize-winning debut, Interpreter of Maladies--must begin with a name: Gogol Ganguli. Born to an Indian academic and his wife, Gogol is afflicted from birth with a name that is neither Indian nor American nor even really a first name at all. He is given the name by his father who, before he came to America to study at MIT, was almost killed in a train wreck in India. Rescuers caught sight of the volume of Nikolai Gogol's short stories that he held, and hauled him from the train. Ashoke gives his American-born son the name as a kind of placeholder, and the awkward thing sticks.
Awkwardness is Gogol's birthright. He grows up a bright American boy, goes to Yale, has pretty girlfriends, becomes a successful architect, but like many second-generation immigrants, he can never quite find his place in the world. There's a lovely section where he dates a wealthy, cultured young Manhattan woman who lives with her charming parents. They fold Gogol into their easy, elegant life, but even here he can find no peace and he breaks off the relationship. His mother finally sets him up on a blind date with the daughter of a Bengali friend, and Gogol thinks he has found his match. Moushumi, like Gogol, is at odds with the Indian-American world she inhabits. She has found, however, a circuitous escape: "At Brown, her rebellion had been academic ... she'd pursued a double major in French. Immersing herself in a third language, a third culture, had been her refuge--she approached French, unlike things American or Indian, without guilt, or misgiving, or expectation of any kind." Lahiri documents these quiet rebellions and random longings with great sensitivity. There's no cleverness or showing-off in The Namesake, just beautifully confident storytelling. Gogol's story is neither comedy nor tragedy; it's simply that ordinary, hard-to-get-down-on-paper commodity: real life. --Claire Dederer

Flat Wedding Shoes Are The Brides Number One Choice

Flat Wedding Shoes Are The Brides Number One Choice

Some women wear stilettos confidently. They wear them to work, to the shopping mall and just about anywhere they go. For these ladies choosing high heels or platform shoes for a wedding would make perfect sense. However there are many other women who aren't comfortable wearing shoes with five inch heels on them. Fortunately for these ladies there is a huge selection of flat wedding shoes on the market today. These shoes are a fabulous alternative to stilettos and platform shoes.

Flat Wedding Shoes Are The Brides Number One Choice

Individuals may choose wedding shoes with high heels because they seem more fitting for the occasion. However, because of the demand for flat shoes, designers have come up with many interesting and formal designs. There are flats on the market which are very decorative with appliqués, ribbons and rhinestones. There are also accessories designed to attach to wedding shoes to make them look formal and appropriate for fancy events such as weddings.

When referring to flat wedding shoes the spectrum goes far beyond a basic closed-toe shoe. This style of wedding shoes could include sandals, pumps, ballet shoes and even flip-flops. Yes shoe manufacturers are now producing wedding flip-flops. Each of these shoe styles can be bought in a variety of designs. When choosing wedding shoes with no heel, the possibilities are endless.

Flat shoes are suitable for any individual attending a wedding. Many brides wear flat shoes because they are comfortable and they simply feel better than heels. Flat shoes are perfect for the young girls in the bridal party like flower girls or junior bridesmaids. There are some very cute flat wedding shoes on the market for young girls today. High heels and platforms are not really suitable for little girls. Not only would they be uncomfortable but they'd be unsafe as well.

When shopping for wedding shoes it's beneficial to realize there are dyeable types on the market as well. To ensure all female members of the bridal party are similarly dressed, their shoes could be dyed the same color. There are also flat wedding shoes on the market made from various materials. It may be possible to find them made from the same material as the bridesmaid's gowns, for example silk or satin.

Shopping for wedding shoes is not at the top of everyone's list when planning to attend a wedding. It does require consideration however at some point. If deciding on flat wedding shoes the hunt shouldn't wait until last minute, especially if hoping to find them in a local shopping mall or shoe store. No doubt they'll carry a selection of wedding shoes but it may be limited. The best shopping center for fabulous wedding shoes at reasonable prices is the Internet. Shopping online not only provides access to shoe stores nationally but internationally. This worldwide access provides a much larger variety of designs and styles. If hoping to find flat shoes similar to those seen in a magazine or on a television fashion show, the Internet is the best possible opportunity.

Survey of Historic Costume: A History of Western Dress

Survey of Historic Costume: A History of Western Dress Review

Survey of Historic Costume: A History of Western Dress

Survey of Historic Costume: A History of Western Dress Overview

In the Preface of the 5th Edition of Survey of Historic Costume, Tortora and Eubank conclude
with the following: In the history of dress at the beginning of the 21st century,
costume might be compared to a constantly moving river. This river divides into many narrower
channels that separate, cross, come together, and separate again, and yet that river
continually moves on. Building on the previous editions, the authors update their analysis
of Western dress to 2008. With each new edition some elements of the title change. And
those changes provide an opportunity to focus on some aspect that adds to the usefulness
of this best seller. Survey of Historic Costume has, from its beginnings, taken seriously the
need to accompany the text with appropriate illustrations and the major change in the 5th
Edition is the move to full color throughout the book to enrich the text and the concepts.
Perfect for anyone interested in historic costume, fashion, textiles, drama, and design, this
beautifully illustrated book is full of interesting facts and commentary.
