The arch of the foot is formed by the tarsal and metatarsal bones and strengthened by ligaments and tendons. It allows the foot to support the weight of the body in the erect posture with the least weight.

The height of the arch determines pronation and foot type. The arch height of the foot can easily be checked using the wet feet test.

People with a Low arch do not have a distinct curve along the inside of the foot. The imprint taken in a wet test may show nearly the entire foot. People with low arches are more likely to overpronate which can result in injuries. Insufficiently expressed arches are called low or fallen arches. The term flat feet applies to the arch which is sitting on the ground completely.

* Runners with flat feet need to put extra care in choosing the best running shoe

Your foot arch is your natural shock absorption system. Nature designed it so that when you put your body weight over your feet the shock is absorbed by this mechanism in order to alleviate the impact (and subsequent injuries) that would otherwise hit your feet, ankles, knees and hips. A flat foot is the most visible sign of overpronation, meaning that your arch collapses during the impact on the ground. As a consequence, your ankle twists inward and your knees overcompensates.

Flat feet are a particular concern for runners, as during the running gait the arch is supposed to support on average 3 times their body weight.

* Shoes Technologies Aimed at Runners with Flat Feet

Over the last 20 years or so, all the major running footwear producers developed specific technologies aimed at helping runners with flat feet run in comfort and safety.
The key words you have to remember are: stability, support and motion control.
- Support is what a flat foot runner needs. When looking at shoes reviews or technical specifications, any indication of "added support" means you are headed in the right direction.
- Stability is an industry standard term that categorizes running shoes aimed at helping overpronation: every brand has their own collection of Stability Running Shoes.
- Motion Control are Stability Shoes for the most severe overpronators: they include the solutions of stability shoes and focus in enhancing them.

The main technology found in Stability shoes is a medial post of dual density foam. Footwear producers inject a harder compound of foam right below the medial side of the arch and sometimes extended all the way to the heel. It is easily recognizable as a darker (almost always gray) piece of foam on the inside of the midsole.

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

Flat Footwear is Dangerous Too

We have always heard the phrase that 'high heels are dangerous.' High heels causes several health issues related to the knees, back and spine. And, when it becomes too difficult to manage people just switch on to flat shoes. But, did you know that flats are dangerous too?

There have been a rise in the number of foot injuries in the past few years caused by flat shoes like flip flops and ballerinas. Though convenient, these shoes can cause severe pain in the back and shins. People scuff their feet instead of walking which wrecks the posture of the body and results in severe pain which in turn causes bunions. [ A bunion is a painful condition caused by the deformity of the bones at the first joint of the big toe]. It's not it, the knee caps can also get swollen resulting in severe pain. And, if the shoes have hard insoles the effect is even worse. Whether they are flat or high heeled, it's best to stay away from footwear that has hard insoles.

In fact walking with heels has its own benefits. It modifies the center of gravity preparing your legs to generate muscle and toning them particularly in the calf and thighs. And, for those who suffer from bad blood circulation wearing one inch heels can actually improve the amount of blood flowing from the legs to the upper body. Apart from it, it also aids in proper alignment of the lower back muscles giving the illusion of a hale and hearty curve at the back. This does not mean you can walk in a six inch heel and still remain healthy. While a six inch heel can instantly jazz up an outfit, the hazardous effects are no less when worn constantly. The ideal height is one to one and a half inch heel as it improves your calf muscles. Another aspect is to wear different kinds of heel lengths at different times. Do not stick on to one particular length for a long period.

Most of the severe foot conditions are cause by improper footwear and women are prone to these conditions five times more than the men. Experts say that our feet carries us between 55,000 and 120,000 miles in our lifetime. Hence it is only fair that you take proper care, after all our feet carries our entire body.

The Things That Matter Overview

Does your home tell the story of who you are?

In The Things That Matter, Nate Berkus shares intimate stories from his life, introduces us to people who influenced him and helped him forge his sense of style, and opens up about the remarkable experiences that have left him forever changed, all of which find expression in how he lives today. From his most cherished flea market finds, to his beloved books and photos, to the many extraordinary mementos he’s collected in his travels, every piece defines who he’s become and what endures in his world.

Berkus invites readers into his own home as well as into twelve others, including a sleek steel-and-glass high-rise that soars above Chicago, a rustic cottage in the Hudson Valley, an ultra-chic atelier that maximizes every inch of space, a Greenwich Village townhouse that holds multiple art collections, and a study in meaningful minimalism in Marfa, Texas. The distinctive interiors beautifully displayed in this book offer revealing portraits of their owners’ lives and the inspiring choices that have made them who they are today.

The Things That Matter convincingly lays out Nate Berkus’s philosophy that things do matter. Our homes tell our stories, they reflect the places we’ve been and the people we’ve loved along the way—and there can be no more beautiful design for living than that.

Persuader (Jack Reacher, No. 7) Overview

Jack Reacher.

The ultimate loner.

An elite ex-military cop who left the service years ago, he’s moved from place to place…without family…without possessions…without commitments.

And without fear. Which is good, because trouble—big, violent, complicated trouble—finds Reacher wherever he goes. And when trouble finds him, Reacher does not quit, not once…not ever.

But some unfinished business has now found Reacher. And Reacher is a man who hates unfinished business.

Ten years ago, a key investigation went sour and someone got away with murder. Now a chance encounter brings it all back. Now Reacher sees his one last shot. Some would call it vengeance. Some would call it redemption. Reacher would call it…justice.

Persuader (Jack Reacher, No. 7) Specifications

Jack Reacher, the taciturn ex-MP whose adventures in Lee Child's six previous solidly plotted, expertly paced thrillers have won a devoted fan base, returns in this explosive tale of an undercover operation set up by the FBI to rescue an agent investigating Zachary Beck, a reclusive tycoon believed to be a kingpin in the drug trade. The novel begins with a bang as Reacher rescues Beck's son from a staged kidnapping in order to get close to his father--and trace the connection between Beck and Quinn, a former army intelligence officer who tried to sell blueprints of a secret weapon to Iraq but was murdered before he could pull it off. Or so Reacher thinks, until he spots Quinn in the crowd at a concert in Boston. As usual, Child ratchets up the tension and keeps the reader in suspense until the last page, although his enigmatic hero hardly ever seems to break a sweat. In the tough guy tradition, Reacher and his creator are overdue for a breakout, and this muscular, well-written mystery might be the one. --Jane Adams

The brilliant and acclaimed New York Times bestseller from the author of The Women and When the Killing’s Done

Just off the coast of Southern California, two families—one in the 1880s and one in the 1930s—come to desolate, windswept San Miguel Island in search of self-reliance, freedom, and a new start in their lives. Both Marantha Waters and Elise Lester strive to help their war veteran husbands pursue their dreams but must themselves grapple with the more nebulous hardships of raising a family in brutal isolation. Boyle “skillfully captures that tension-filled quietude” (The New Times Book Review) in this lyrical, intimate, and unforgettable novel.
